  17. <p>    As Lebanon descended into chaos, the Bush Administration
  18. debated whether to shut down its embattled embassy. A pullout
  19. would signal a devastating ineffectiveness, but last week the
  20. White House finally did call it quits, ordering the evacuation
  21. of Ambassador John McCarthy and 29 other officials. The walled
  22. embassy compound had been besieged by 1,500 Christian supporters
  23. of Major General Michel Aoun, who were angered at the U.S.
  24. failure to side with them against Syrian occupiers. The move
  25. left Washington without representation in Beirut for the first
  26. time in Lebanon's 14-year civil war.
